I guess its too early to tell as I've upgraded memory just few days ago but so far system is stable. Yes, using docker package. I haven't done much yet, just started few containers to test. It works. Hay Andriy, thanks for the tutorial! I was wondering if you are planning on upgrading to DSM6.
I am curious if that goes well with the 8GB memory module. If so, Let me know! No worries! I am grad you found it useful. No, I am not planning to use DSM 6. Hi Andriy, great tutorial. Did you see any seal so that it will be visible that the NAS is opened? Not all photos on your blog are shown, but I think I will manage with the ones that are shown and the text you wrote with them.
Is your system still stable? Many thanks! Hi greyhead2! I didn't find any "warranty" seals apart from a sticker attached to original Synology memory module which you don't need to remove anyway. However, silver coloured tape which is designed to secure fan cable is very fragile and once removed it will change its "appearance".
It won't look "new" anymore and I think that just by looking at it Synology warranty technician will be able to tell if unit was disassembled. They all hosted on Google's Blogger. I can send them all to you if you like, just let me know. System is very stable, I didn't have any issues so far and I've built bunch of docker containers by now.
Everything works as expected. Docker engine is a little outdated but it works fine. Good luck with upgrade! Hello Andriy, Thank you for the very detailed tutorial on this topic. How has the stability been since your upgrade, any issues? Hi Justin, Glad you found tutorial helpful. System has been stable so far. No issues at all. Hi Andriy, Thank for the great tutorial. Synology DS215j Review
Since we launched inour articles have been read more than 1 billion times. Want to know more?In this blog post I will show you how to upgrade the RAM on your Synology and give you choices on which one to buy. Disclaimer: Memory upgrade will most likely void the warranty. If you are following my Synology Buying Guide for you know now that I have bought a new Synology for managing my YouTube files as well as drone and gopro files. The great news about it, is that you can upgrade your memory and unless my other Synologies, this time they made those slots accessible hurrahhh!!
If you are unsure if you need to upgrade, start moving some files in your drives and do some work and check the performance.
On the other hand, RAM memory is very cheap nowadays so I would upgrade either way, but if cash is an issue, wait a little bit.
You are probably dying to use your synologybut I recommend you to do this before you start configuring things, because you will see blazing speeds afterwards when transferring files. Nearly every other brand of memory Corsair, G.
They have their own retail branch, support, and memory finder tool. This is an easy one: As much as you can afford and your system supports.
Thanks in advance! Hi, Not that I know. You should be able to upgrade your synology. Maybe the ram you purchased is defective? Ran for 23 hours fine, then blinking blue light. Went back to 4GB for now. Same models everywhere as gas as I aware… Not sure why they only recommend up to 8gb. Ruth, You may want to do some more research on the 16GB thing. And their statistics will base usage off of installed memory, not usable memory — so it is misleading.
Curious if anyone has compared 8GB to 16GB and seen actual differences. Hi Nate, I have upgraded all my NASes and I have noticed a remarkable increase in speed though I have never measured it, no time for that kind of fun. Please let us know if you do some tests! Ok, cool.
There seems to be conflicting information out there on the webs. What if someone running 16GB of memory 2 x 8GB tried to remove one stick and then boot the Synology up again. They could do a test to see if they see any significant performance degradations. Then, pop the 8GB stick back in and see if you see drastic improvements.
Hi Nate! Probably you will get a better response if you post this on reddit. If you get results, let us know! I read too many reports from folks who put in 16 GB and got all sorts of problematic behavior so I will go for the 2 x 4GB for now. That one would experience a performance boost after inserting a second module is not surprising, dual channel utilization would explain that. Whether you have 8 or 16 GB should not make a difference for any application but running several virtual machines at the same time.
The case for 16 GB would be more convincing if someone actually maxed out the memory utilization as shown by the resource monitor and still reported a stable system. Apart from being slightly bigger, from a design perspective the DSj is virtually identical to its smaller stable mate. Furthermore at Given the jump to dual bays, the DSj does offer a slight performance bump compared to the DSj. It takes little more than 10 minutes to set up drives — it supports drives up to 8TB at present — and after that you find yourself inside DSM which, for our money, is the most powerful and intuitive NAS UI currently available.Korg theremin

Align the RAM module with the grooves of the memory slot. It will only fit one way. You will need to insert the module at an angle shown in the picture below. Slowly push the RAM module down until you hear a solid click. Note the two capture arms on both side should hold the RAM module in a locked position. Reverse the above steps. Slide the cover panel back on and reinstall five screws to secure the cover panel.
After a few moments you should hear a single beep indicating a successful boot. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but would this be more for people using it as a media server? Even if you are only running a few services, consider your user base as well.
If you have a lot of simultaneous connections to the device, a RAM bump can make for a noticeable improvement. More is often better, and in this case a relatively inexpensive RAM upgrade will likely serve you well. What are your transfer speeds like with the memory upgrade? Any performance issues with DSM 5? It took a while to boot up to recognize the RAM I supposebut other than that, no problems! Your email address will not be published. Notify me of follow-up comments by email.

April 13, at This is changing a bit in with the newer Synology drives featuring improved hardware choices, but still, for many, it seems a little underwhelming.
It can then see when you need further memory for more current concerns and then free up the memory if needed. In order to genuinely work out if your NAS drive needs more memory, you will need to utilise your Synology device for a while and look at the Memory Monitor during a time of heavy access and usage. Look at the utilization percentage, not free memory — as this will give you a much, MUCH better understanding of the memory that is required.
The reason for this is that the resource monitor will exclude memory buffers and caching that DSM knows it can free up later. Adding more memory will avoid this and improve performance across the board! So if you have purchased a new Synology NAS with the intent to upgrade the default memory, be sure to run it for a week or so without upgrading first to field test the NAS and make sure there are no pre-existing hardware problems. Upgrading the memory is often very simple indeed and simply a case of powering down the device, installing the new memory modules in the NAS as long as you have access to themthen booting up the device.
It may take a little longer than before to boot, as the new memory will be initialized, but you will not need to do any software configuration and the newly installed memory should appear in the resource monitor for immediate use.
Although the Synology NAS memory upgrade process is very easy, it is also very easy to get wrong! It is worth remembering the following points. It is worth mentioning that different NAS drives require different memory types.
All too often there are factors that are as follows:. There are practically no disadvantages none at all, if you buy official Synology Memory and the benefits will be immediate.
You can always wait till later on an upgrade when you notice a drop in performance, however, I would keep an eye on deal websites for your compatible DDR3 or DDR4 Synology NAS supported memory and then grab some when a bargain appears.
There are cases where two drive bays are enough in terms of total available storage space especially with 14TB Seagate and 16TB Toshiba NAS drives in-comingso you will be able to run a lot of applications, for multiple users, but the rather comical MB, MB and 1GB memory available in these budget models is just not enough to run DSM to its full potential on these NAS and the result will be that most users will walk away with a very poor opinion of the Synology NAS experience.

Nice review. I will be testing some things out and can report back but thought I would ask. You have listed DDR3L as matching ram.On the face of it, 6GB of 8GB seems like plenty. That will comfortably support the NAS tasks of a plex media server, all those productive first party NAS applications and backups.
Sadly, we have asked the manufacturers and they continue to stand by the fact that you cannot exceed this limit, officially. Read below for my guide, it will detail how to install the RAM, how to check that it is installed correctly and how to test that it is working straight away.
We at NASCompares cannot be held accountable for how you use this guide. Only attempt this upgrade if you are comfortable with the terms laid out above by the manufacturer. Additionally, you should remove the hard drive media as the unit will be moved around a lot during the memory installation and this could damage the drives. Be sure you eject the official memory sticks using the clips either side of the slot, as well as only holding the memory sticks by the narrow side edges, never touching the chips or board of the money or NAS.
Once you have removed them, they can either be stored away for a later project, installed in a compatible laptop or sold on eBay etc to make a little cash back! Once they are clear, install an 8GB Crucial Memory stick in each of the now available slots, making sure that you click them both in with the clips either side.
Once the NAS user interface UI is ready to go, head over to the hardware specification page shown here:. It should spike each time and at a greater height as you do more and more and once it exceeds the memory you had previously installed, this is a good confirmation that the installation is working fine.
Alternatively, you can temporarily allocate chunks of memory and then that is a much more reliable test. If there are any issues with the memory, it will show here almost immediately. You can then delete the VMs in the virtual machine software and then free up all that memory again. Your Name required. Your Country required. Your Email required.
